Scars Upon The Earth

Today is one of those days where I’m a bit taken aback by the human race.  When logging onto my e-mail account this morning, I saw a headline about an elk that was put down as a result of becoming too friendly with people.  It is not as if I am just a “free love hippie” that doesn’t understand the risk of wildlife becoming too desensitize to people.  I grew up with two wilderness rangers for parents.  I’ve been around wildlife professionals all my life.  And that is precisely what has given rise to my general disappointment in them.  There are few loving conservationists in the wildlife profession.  More often the profession is full of a great many men, who simply never wanted to work a desk job; men whom bring an archaic view of man against nature and man against the elements to the table in their professional lives.

A video went viral recently of a nature photographer being head butted in a playful manner by this elk that continued to show no fear of people and continued to instead initiate play with them.  He was euthanized on account of “risk”.  The park officials said they could not take the risk of him potentially attempting to become too familiar with someone too small, such as a child.

To me, this incident is evidence of our disconnection.  It goes hand in hand with the news surfacing about the aftermath of Fukushima.   As people, it seems we never quite grow tired of suffering in the aftermath of our ignorance again and again.  We are a most confusing species.  Ego is the strongest in our species, which makes us at once one of the most amazing and one of the most disgraceful species.  Humans are known around the universe as the great creators.  Our minds and our desires compel us towards expansion at a rate that has never before been seen.  But he, who can create, can resist.  Our state of resistance makes us both miserable and capable of atrocities that have never before been experienced in the universe.  The ego in us has taken hold of us and whispered in our ear that we are the most important species.  It tells us that God created us in its image.  But all things are created in its image, because all things are an extension of what we call god.  Our human society, like a mass scale sociopath behaves as if all other species are here to serve us.  As if love is a sickly dance of submission and domination.

planet-earth-from-space

This earth does not belong to anyone.  The idea of ownership is erroneous in its makeup, more evidence of our disconnection.  You should have seen the reaction when the idea of owning parts of the earth or other animals was presented to the Native Americans.  It sounded like a joke to them.  For thousands of years, their survival had depended on the enmeshment between themselves and the earth they walked upon.  It was a horizontal relationship of equality and harmony that they had with the earth as opposed to a vertical relationship, were their power made them somehow above it or their powerlessness made them somehow beneath it.  We did not lose the truth of our interdependence, a truth that those early ancestors of ours knew subconsciously at the core of their being.  We took that truth for granted.  And so it can be said that we never really consciously knew it.  But we are learning it on a conscious level now.  As a result of the contrast we are creating here on earth.  We are finding out the hard way just how dependent we are on the earth and on all species that call earth home.  Soon, even the most ignorant on earth will consciously know and see the truth that we share this earth, which sustains us with every other species on this earth… with plant, with mineral, with animal etc.  We cannot destroy any part of it, without destroying ourselves in the process.  And we are doing it.  Sometimes, in my moments of weakest vision, I fear that we are doing it at such a rate that we will not realize what we have done, until it is too late.  If I truly believed that all was lost, I would not be doing the job I am doing.  But it is difficult to not loose faith in people when I come across stories such as this.  I have trouble focusing positively towards our arrogance and entitlement.  I have trouble with the fact that we do not understand that we do not get to set the rules for earth itself and for all the creatures in it.

It is my desire that all people come to know the experience of oneness in this life.  If everyone knew it, the experience of separation would become intolerable.  So intolerable in fact that our society would have to change to reflect that oneness.  We could not hurt each other, because we would feel so deeply and immediately the effect of doing so.  A world where the human, the great creator, creates harmony and compassion and love, would be an unparalleled world.  Nothing to rival it in the universe perhaps.  Nothing but the scars of the lessons we once learned etched upon the earth to remind us always of the unity we stand for.  It is a beautiful dream.  A reachable dream… Of course all dreams are inherently reachable, otherwise, you could not dream them in the first place.

  • Sweet Teal, keep dreaming. By doing that we are creating that very thing that we desire. You/we are changing the world. There are more and more of us who already feel the oneness. We cherish that in our hearts as we KNOW it is the only truth. That is such a well of pure joy. Nothing that happens outside of us can’t take it away from us. The suffering of separation is just a painful dream. It will end one way or the other. I hold on to my vision, it is in my heart.

  • I too am losing hope that we will realize as a species. I know many do hold this awareness. Are we yet willing to give up all behavior that uses resources of privilege? Airlines? Hair dye? electricity? etc. etc. We keep waiting for companies and governments to provide the alternatives. Soon we will be forced to live back in touch with animal survival, on an individual basis. I for one, miss cooking over a fire and sleeping on the ground. When we did this, as many on the planet actually do (and we call them third world) our intuition and the abilities to hear our Mother’s wisdom comes back.

  • I grew up in Central Fla in the sixties and seventies and watched the phosphate companies come in and destroy millions of acres of land that will never ever be the same. I had an Uncle in South Georgia who owned a farm raising hogs and cows simply for the purpose of selling them to market for a profit. My Uncle never had any appreciation or connection to nature that was all around him each and every day. All my life I have been close to and respectful of nature only to watch the more powerful ego of man destroy the Earth and wildlife for it’s own financial gain. I don’t live far away from where this incident with the elk took place. A black bear recently found its way in the parking lot of a Burger King here in Blairsville, GA only to be killed by the police. For them there was no other way but to destroy the animal.

Although I totally agree with your article, I am also aware it falls on deaf ears. The people like you, me, and others who want it different simply do not have the power to affect change at the level where change needs to be affected in the realm of politics and those who make the laws.

Man is still the most destructive force in the universe at present. It will always be this way until the teachers who support the higher way out number those who believe in destruction for the aim of profit. The metaphysical and new age teachers simply do not have the power to affect the kind of change that is needed because to many other people want it to remain the way it is.

    • Sadly Wayne, I agree with you completely. My ultruism and vision for a better world have ended up not serving me as I come up against the exitstential truth that I lack personal power. And I also see that lack of personal power in the Spiritual, well-meaning, Ultruistic, peoples of this world. Look at the David Suzukis and others who have been pleading with ppl for decades about the rapidity of Climate Change, even using clear and verified Scientific models to back his theses; they are fundamentally ignored. I have followed various highly awakened Masters only to be disappointed at their remaining egoism and lack of personal power to create World change, even though they too have this higher vision. Their vision remains inward and lacks the demonstrable power to create change in the outer worldd. I too fear where this World is headed. It is simply not in my vision that people care enough and have reached an egoless space enough to be able to see. What does one do then or how can one be? I have to keep treading my spiritual path, not really knowing if the Higher Forces will help align the Human Race eventually with a greater vision of becoming. I accept that my Higher Vision is not complete and that I am still very much on the path developing. Perhaps as I progress, I will be allowed to break through into a vision of my own illiusions surrounding the true nature of the outer world. And perhaps from my own egoic point of view, my vision of the world does remain an illusion. Time will tell. Perhaps my higher vision for the world will manfest differently from the way I expect it to become.

    • I disagree that we do not have the power. It is an illusion that they have the power and we don’t. I think that a few people who are truly connected and collectively focusing on the outcome they want to achieve, will eventually create it, as positive polarisation accumulates, whereas negative polarisation remains separated. 1 fully aligned person is a hundred times more powerful than 100 unaligned persons. What we need to do here is look for the examples where the opposite is happening ie the stories of people saving animals, people living in new ways, companies who do actually go towards the alternative etc. and then concentrate on creating more of that. I am of course aware of me maybe simplifying it a little bit too much here, but roughly speaking, I think that’s the only way to escape the “things as they are” dilemma.

  • I ask with genuine curiosity: Do you really think that everyone will reach oneness in this life? In whose life, yours or theirs? I feel like that’s the ideal to move towards on an individual basis, but that’s what it is, an ideal. Expecting everyone to reach it in your lifetime, on a global level… isn’t that too… idealistic? Doesn’t it create a feeling of disconnectedness with what’s around you, like a denial of how this is all flowing?

Is that desire for everyone to experience oneness something we can all be motivated by, but fraught with unrealistic expectation when we’re upset that it feels so far away? Or am I limited in my belief of what surrounds me in terms of possibility of shift and expansion?

This earth is co created space, the place where you speak and I hear, we live in the interface of our vibrational matches.

I say this kindly but I feel like this post is coming from a place of resistance to what’s around you, I was just watching your Santa Fe workshop and this feels like it comes from such a lower vibration.

I feel this so much! I just made a post yesterday how the age of information drowns us in all the cruelty there is out there. I watched this heart wrenching video about a 33 year old bear that spent 30 years in a tiny cage with a metal jacket on and a catheter so bile could be extracted. Looking at the evidence of cruelty it blows my mind people are so naive and buy the products this cruelty is producing. I also recently deleted a friend from my page because I was welcomed to pics of animal murder first thing Sunday morning. These very well to do people decided to take a “hunting vacation” to teach their kids. I instantly became sick with anxiety when I saw the picture of a 10 year old girl holding up the head of a BABY deer!!!! All the comments were congratulating her…. I wrote I must be the only one disturbed by this selfish act of cruelty just for a game of power. It’s like the suffering never ends. My head spins and I try to find the silver lining but at the end of the day there seems to be soooo much cruelty. I do my part but is it ever enough to make a difference?? Thank you for sharing this Teal as always your life parallels mine and I get relief from your perspectives. Blessings

  • Yes we can create the world we want. Totally. You can envision this change towards the Earth we want happening like this: positive energy/light/oneness/clarity grows brighter and brighter in individuals. People notice their brightness. The desire to be bright is inspired. Brightness attracts more brightness, love creates more love. People start to get together, UNTIL, such a mass energy of love has arisen that even the most shut down of people notice it, and begin to open up to it.

SO, detach from the outcome of what happens to Mother Earth, as beautiful as she is, and be as bright and as connected as you can possibly be, and then be EVEN MORE bright and connected. Be so bright that I notice your brightness from all the way over here, and I’ll be so bright that you notice my brightness from all the way over there. With just a few people, we can make a web of brightness all around the Earth.

    Namaste beautiful soul.

    • Hi Justin. These are nice sentiments, but the material plane needs more than that for it to change. Examples of simpler alternative life styles are what spark the imagination of the masses. Most people have a dream to be back in nature living a healthy lifestyle. Mass media is starting to feature this. The ‘Preppers’ movement is part of this even though it is abberated at present and fear based.

      • Nice sentiments are the source/beginning of nice results. I’ve started to put it into practice in my own life. What’s more important than the example we present is the energetic source of the example, because that is what becomes precisely manifest. We don’t need to fight anymore, we can start to flow and enjoy the journey to wellness in ourselves and with the Earth.

True Teal, I believe that most of the problems are due to the sense of separation most of we humans have, Every bad new we see on are because of that, a corrupt politician is because of that too, Some groups like green peace are in the good labor of creating concience, I support that group.
About the elk, it wasn’t your faul Teal that he was put dow,
it was the officicer’s of the park fault because they did it .

    Reply
    • It is not the politician’s fault. They get voted in by the mass of ignorant religious sports addicted people who are manipulated by the media, who in turn feed the mass’s addictions to quick fix material comfort at the expense of the planet. It is a loop we are all involved in somewhere or some how. The happiest healthiest time of my life was living in an old caravan beside a creek in the subtropics of Eastern Australia. I cycled everywhere I needed to be. I had a one panel solar set up that powered my electric piano, radio, computer and lights. I grew all my own vegetables and collected rainwater off the tropical roof of the caravan. Everything was recycled. The land was rent free in return for manual labor. Fixing fences, repairing machinery, mowing, orchard work and building bridges. I had a little old car for emergencies. My garden was so productive that many people benefitted from it. I predict there will be mass migration of city people out to the the country soon. Real community spirit thrives when bartering becomes the norm. What do you think?

  • I truly believe the old ways of doing things are all but over and are currently dying out with the generation in power. This is just another example that fear based reaction to our environment and not listening to one’s guiding principals which dictates acceptable behavior does not work. You can’t do harm to anything without harming yourself in the process and I believe most people (most people I know anyways) are waking up to this fact.

I believe the core process of the turn around is in this group and groups like it that inter connect. I believe it is absolutely critical for those who are aware to do every thing in our power to connect and educate others. Recent push back from pictures “sport” killing of African wild life for example, the Whale & Dolphin outreach from many organizations and people…… and videos about humans untangling dolphins and Elephants and dogs pairing up as buddies etc. How about 29 of the 30 Green peace sailors being released from Russian jail this week… The changes both good and bad are happening so fast. I wonder now at my rather slow peaceful childhood of the 40ies and 50ies…. that was centuries ago ….. What seems obvious is that Earth will survive, but the human race may not…… then what…… I hope humans survive, I am already planning my next incarnation…… I have 29 years to go on this one if I live to 104….. hum… sure is messy here…..

We can also look at the over population problem in places like China where the air pollution is so bad that it is literally choking people in cities there.
Are we in such a race to create financial wealth that we actually exterminate the human race with our own greed and ignorance? Dave

    Reply
    • Hi Dave, Yes BUT! Each person has their own dream to fulfil. Greed is ignorance and the fear of not surviving. When a viable alternative is in the offing the masses will come on board. Meanwhile safe retreats are being constructed all around the planet. These will become the norm. People who are prepared to limit their consumption of resources will find empoverished but safe havens. Extreme global weather pattern changes will probably collapse national economies. Japan’s nuclear crisis could wipe out all sea life eventually. New ways of producing protein are already available but probably won’t save millions of humans from getting radioactive fish in their diets. The miraculous technology, like free electricity, may actually already be available but being withheld because of potential break downs in society that it could cause. ie unemployment. Oil has to run out before the alternative techs get enough support to make a difference. Look after your health and stay clear of crowds. The future could be great.

  • I am very hopeful that we can reverse a good deal if we make an effort. We need to make safer products choices as to not pollute our own drinking water. There are many options and there are more natural/ organic choices. I think the u.s. should be promoting recycling more than we do as we are one of the biggest trash contributors. Cities such as new York are considering a plastic bag tax that at only )10-15 cents a bag could raise 10 million dollars to be put in environmental fund.
It’s certainly the beginning of new times, and it’s time we should be focused on recycling our resources. If we focus on positive outcomes we want for our environment we will make it a reality.

  • Hi Teal, This is the best blog yet. If you get on the environmental campaigne trail like I did for 6 years 24/7, you will be a guiding light with your phylosophy. It is very character forming. I made huge errors in my early days in how I dealt with bureaucracy, media and the Government Authorities. My agenda was to challenge authority and demonstrate the power of one. (after discovering the apathy of the masses) This is not the way to go. I had to experience it to find that out. Now I work under cover and have ceased sermonizing. The power of one is in learning to use the phrase “How can we work this out together” Many people want to help me but their employment is on the line. They have families to consider. Working through the media is the way to go. Making videos for TV channels and finding your own sponsors, ie producing programs in lifestyle shows is far more powerful than organizing blockades and demonstrations. I have given up on petitions, letters to the editiors, and state politicians. I have given up on being a politician or joining councils. Info-tainment is the fun side of changing society. You are already doing it.

How much of wildlife would interact with humans in such a positive way? I, myself, am glad and appreciate the fact that an elk can interact with a human in such a playful & actually positive way. It sucks & its utter bullshit about the reasons why the authorities decided to have that elk killed, er, I mean, euthanized (: /), But, on the positive side, at least the photographer encountering the elk didn’t try or do anything negative in his response to the elk. I’m sure he knows now that they decided to have that elk killed and he probably feels bad about it, feeling that it was needless, which it actually was.

I saw a bumper sticker on a car a while back that said “Fearful people do fearful things”. True. And its true on a national/international scale as well with the way some nations of the world will respond to other nations, like how the US & other nations respond to nations like Iran, North Korea, China, etc.
