First Snow

Today was the first day of snow, my favorite day of the year.  Like usual on the first day of snow, I went out into it and opened my bare chest to it; letting the downy snowflakes fall against my skin.  In the meadows of the sky, I could see mile upon mile of them making their way to earth.  I could feel the pull of winter in the air.  I fell in love with the winter long ago and made my home in the heavy folds of its purity.  A part of me still lives there.  It will live there forever.  There is a kind of warmth to the coldness of winter.  It has a particular way of wrapping the land and all of its inhabitants in a familiar embrace.  The snow makes everything beautiful.  I feel safe under the heaviness of the clouds that carry snow.  They close in around these mountain towns and create an heir of intimacy even among strangers.  People flee into coffee shops and lodges to buy their hot chocolate.  Fires crackle in the background of conversations.  It feels like Christmas all year long.

I cannot wait to ski.  There are people who ski for fun and then there are people who have sold their soul to the snow covered mountains.  For those kinds of people, life begins when the snow flies and stops when the snow melts.  The summer is a kind of soul hibernation.  For us, waiting for the winter to return, feels like waiting for a lover to return.  It is as if all of us who have built a life around skiing, have all fallen in love with the same muse.  We pass each other on the street; see the sparkle in each other’s eyes and then smile at one another as if to say,  “ah, I see you fell for her too!”  There is nothing quite like the jubilant stir of a ski town on the first day of snow.  I love days like today.  Days where it feels like if you reach out far enough, you could feel the season ripen past you.

Graciela took this picture of me today at a restaurant with the snow falling behind me.  I was so excited to get to wear my favorite ski jacket again!

  • I love your jacket!! I love everything with stars, galaxies, nebulas. I love the brightness of color in them :) I still hadn’t had the opportunity to be in a place with that much snow so I can throw myself on it and make a snow angel in a state of pure joy :D

  • Gorgeous expression of thoughts! I’ve always felt the same. Comes from the genes I suppose. One of the reasons my dad is surviving in the US is because of the snowfall. He wholeheartedly loves snow. His joy is un-comprehendable when the snow starts. Thanks for sharing. :)

  • Thank you for such a lovely described perspective of winter, Teal!! In Canada it seems as though many dread the long, harsh winters, so it is nice to see how winter can be a beautiful manifestation. Your blog is amazing, and your words are beautiful, as are you in that wicked jacket!! <3

  • “There is a kind of warmth to the coldness of winter.” Years ago while sojourning as a guest with a few Germans friends in one of their rustic country lodges during a massive snow storm in the dark night on a very cold mountain side in east Germany in the warmth and glow of a roaring fire I made that exact comment to my sympathetic and congenial companions in the course of relating my heartbreak over the recent loss of a friend and lover. The scene is still burned into my memory. Somehow I have always been comforted by that thought and continue to be comforted by the winter season. This new song somehow captures the gestalt of that long ago night. Sorry, but your comments released a flood of long suppressed memories and feelings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWtsV50_-p4

  • … and, thank you for that description. I realize you’re right — snow does bring the feeling of warmth. Maybe because when we gather around the heater or fire during cold snowy days and nights, there are brief moments when we receive more heat than at any point during a hot summer. To put it in mathematical terms (and so ruin any romance of it), during the summer the average temperature we absorb is much higher than during the winter, but during the winter the extremes are much more pronounced, both the lows and the highs.

And what makes life memorable is not the averages but the extremes.

  • It’s feeling wintry up here in Jasper as well, it was well below freezing last night (-6 Celsius) and was pretty chilly this evening when I went for a hike. I was loving it. Sometimes I’m in the mood for winter and sometimes not. But right now I’m enjoying the colder weather and am almost regretting leaving before winter hits (almost, but not quite). But I’m totally hoping that at least I’ll get to see a snowstorm before I take off in another 2 weeks.

By the way, speaking of being bare-chested in the snow, you might enjoy one of my music videos: “Singing in a Snowstorm”. :)

  • You are so beautiful inside and out. Please don’t let anyone take you down. Choose people who will support you like Graciela, who don’t need to be spoon fed. (referring to the recent video you did with friends around a table.) The girl on right (my right) is not good for you Teal. She needs to go find herself with out you. It’s not even good for her to stay with you. She wants to identify with someone put needs to see her own beauty. She can’t use you as a crutch its not good for both of you. Graciela comes from a space of strength and the other from a space of weakness. If you love her let her go…..as the song goes…..
The blond guy is very nice too and wants your good. You are amazing. I learned so much from that video. You remind me of a spiritual teacher I had many years ago, she had exactly the same messages you do. And now I understand why she let me go. I was like that girl next to you…..it took all these years to understand after watching your video. I also learned something else, when you said It takes alot for me not to love you all. Sometimes love requires to let go to for everyone’s good. xxxxx

  • Wow, I love the way you describe the snow. I’m from the East Coast, USA, but now live in the South of France, where it still feels like summer at the moment. I’m not a big skier, but I do like cross country skiing during the winter. There is something comforting in the silent warmth of the snow.
We are lucky in that the Alpes are not even 2 hours away. We can drive into a proper winter when we want. :-)

” For us, waiting for the winter to return, feels like waiting for a lover to return. ”

… through your way of perceiving and reflecting on life you keep showing me
how much of it I keep missing.
How much of the beauty I keep avoiding.

Your lines are very important lectures in this phase of my life.
    You trully are the catalyst.

  • Funny, I love Summer and hibernate in the Winter. It has taken me a long time to be able to appreciate the Winter. I hate being cold and I can get so cold, but we got a hot tub, outside :) , and that has made it a lot easier! I appreciate hearing how passionate you are about it! It will help get me through the Winter ;)

  • Beautiful entry . . . I know what you mean. When it snows here in Chicago, I pull out the X-country skis and head for the nearest forest preserve trail. The beauty of trees freshly covered in snow is like candy for the soul! It is magical. Just bought your book, “The Sculptor in the Sky,” and began reading it. It’s been on my read list for a while and can’t wait to finish it! Thanks for all the work you do; many of your subjects (if not all) hit close to home and your words do provide insight!

  • A kind of magical and silencing relief bringing back wilderness and unexplored beauty each time. Day of first snow always felt like the most inspiring time of the year being one of the few things I really could relate to in my hometown back then, especially with this little “archway” I shot a few years ago. Still making me smile.

  • AWESOME!!!! I feel the same way about the first Fall storm here in Texas. I love the vibrations the storm brings. I love way all the energy builds from everyone and everything preparing for That storm and then when it comes, it’s like everything that has burned and sweated during the summer just breaths a sigh of relief. I love the way it all makes me feel….. Come on Wednesday. There is a 50% chance of rain!!!! I am feeling excited.
